Garhwal and Rudraprayag Tour Itinerary

Day 1
Roopkund is a moderate to difficult level trek where a person should have physical fitness and mental endurance. Roopkund lies in the lap of Trishul massif. The whole surroundings is covered in a thick blanket of snow and amidst this beautiful setting lies a porcelain lake. The lake is two metres at depth and is often called ‘Skeleton Lake’. The reason being the hundreds of human skeletons found at the bottom of this lake. Research suggests that once in the 9 th century, a violent hailstorm had caused mayhem in this region. Many people had accidentally fallen in the lake. Ever since then these skeletons are present here. The trail leading to the Roopkund trek is equally enchanting and thrilling. The starting point of trek is the beautiful hamlet in Chamoli called Lohajung. The trail later passes through beautiful Ali Bugyal and Bedni Bugyal. Bugyal refers to meadows in the local language. These plush alpine meadows with apple orchards in the vicinity are too beautiful to be called real! Through the dense Oak and deodar forests trekkers ascends to Roopkund while the glittering Trishul peak is clearly visible from here. Roopkund trail is also famous for an enchanting pilgrimage festival called ‘Nanda Devi RajJat’ which takes place once every twelve years here. The event marks the journey of Nanda Devi (the consort of Lord Shiva) from her maternal home to Nanda Devi peak.

Best Time to Visit

Summers (May and June) and post monsoon months (September and October) are preferable for trekking. In summers, the lake is frozen and skeletons won’t be visible to you. However, if snow is your priority then definitely go in the beginning of May. Monsoons are harsh in the region and can be perilious for trekking.
